The NYO Games and Junior NYO Games are annual athletic events for students in grades 1–12 from across the state.

The Games encourage healthy lifestyles, traditional values and positive sportsmanship—all in an atmosphere of fun and excitement.

For more than 40 years, hundreds of young people from communities throughout Alaska have competed in traditional contests of skill and strength, including the One-hand Reach, One and Two-foot High Kicks, Alaskan High Kick, Wrist Carry, Seal Hop and other exciting events.

Participating in NYO promotes:

  • healthy lifestyles
  • positive self-esteem and leadership skills
  • appreciation of Alaska Native traditions and cultures
  • good sportsmanship through friendly competition

By participating in NYO, young people help strengthen the awareness of traditional subsistence and survival skills that have been passed down through countless generations.

Eligibility

Open to all Alaska students in grades 1–12, up to 19 years of age. For more information on getting involved, please visit our NYO Events page, or call (907) 793-3265.
