As unemployment rates related to COVID-19 continue to rise, a record number of Alaskans are filing for unemployment benefits, and many of our fellow Alaskans are struggling to make ends meet. Bean’s Café, which has been the go-to resource for Anchorage’s homeless and hungry individuals since 2004, has helped answer this need with two new temporary shelters providing a total of 480 beds.
Now, Bean’s Café is spearheading an effort to raise $500,000 to feed hungry families and children in Anchorage.
Along with its Children’s Lunchbox program, Bean’s Café aims to feed 50,000 of our community’s most vulnerable individuals and families with the amount raised.
CITC is proud to stand with Bean’s Café and The Children’s Lunchbox through a pledge of $30,000 to the campaign. We are also making our full range of resources available to support this effort, including offering transportation services, staff support, and the use of our facility for meal preparations – whatever we can do to help meet this urgent need in our community.
You can help, too. Consider making a monetary donation to Bean’s Café and The Children’s Lunchbox.
Bean’s Café and The Children’s Lunchbox are also asking for donations of physical items, a list that changes regularly. As of April 13, the organization is asking for:
- TWIN size or smaller blankets (The laundry service can only fit TWIN size blankets. All blankets need to be NEW or laundered with high heat and bagged. Due to health concerns, blankets that are not laundered, have pet hair, or smell of cigarettes cannot be accepted.)
- Sports bras
- New underwear (men’s and women’s)
- Tennis shoes and boots (especially bigger sizes)
- Tank tops and camisoles
- Deodorant (non aerosol)
- Feminine hygiene products
- Foot powder
- Hair brush combs hair ties head bands hair accessories
Donations may be dropped off at the Sullivan Arena parking lot (1600 Gambell / 16th Avenue side) on Fridays from 10 am-12 pm and 2 pm- 4 pm. This will be a drive-thru style drop off, and donors will receive a tax-deductible donation slip. Bean’s can only accept requested items.
This is a difficult time, and it is going to require all of us to come together to ensure our children and families are cared for during this crisis. We know that when we work together, we are stronger. Help strengthen our community partners by making a donation today.
