Denełchin Success Stories: Jeremiah Johnson
Jeremiah started his journey at the Denełchin Lab as a participant. His quiet confidence and eagerness to learn eventually landed him a summer internship there. He quickly became a valued member of the team – taking on new projects, bringing a positive attitude to camps, and setting an example for fellow students. While his time at the lab ended this past spring after graduating from Bartlett High School and accepting a summer internship at the Alaska Dinner Factory through CITC’s Youth Services program, it is clear his impact will be felt well beyond his departure.
Jeremiah represents a proof of concept. When the Denełchin Lab was created, it was done with students like him in mind. This piece tells the story of his success through a series of images, as well as quotes from two of the instructors who helped him along the way: Benjamin Schleifman and Alla Johnson. It’s a fitting structure for someone who carried no ego and let his work do the talking.
Alla: Throughout his time with us, Jeremiah created many impressive projects that reflected both his creativity and determination to learn new skills.
Benjamin: Jeremiah has a very dry sense of humor. If you don’t know him, or don’t know how he communicates, you would never know how funny he is.
Benjamin: His understated nature is entirely reflective of him as a student and as an intern. He quietly gets things done – well and efficiently.
Alla: This year, he chose to learn the art of cedar bark weaving. He began by making a small basket before challenging himself to create his own woven hat. To complete the project, Jeremiah measured his head, designed a 3D model, and printed a custom hat form that he then used to weave and shape his hat.
Alla: His ability to combine cultural art with modern STEAM skills demonstrated both his creativity and dedication to learning.
Benjamin: It’s been a joy to have the privilege of working with him for the last few years. He is most definitely a person I will miss having regular interactions with, and I wish him well on his journey ahead.
Alla: Over the years, we have had the privilege of watching him grow into an amazing young man whose hard work, dedication, and positive attitude have made a lasting impact on everyone around him.
Alla: Jeremiah consistently showed leadership, responsibility, and a willingness to help wherever he was needed. He set a wonderful example for other students by showing what can be accomplished through commitment, kindness, perseverance, and a passion for learning. We are so proud of the person he is becoming and know he has a bright future ahead of him.
