06 Jun School’s Out for Summer – and Camps Are in Session!
Get a preview of CITC’s summer camps for students
The sun is out, and so is school — and that can only mean one thing: Summer camps at CITC are in full swing!
This summer, CITC youth and education programs are offering up a whole host of camp opportunities for a wide range of students. From cultural camps for kindergarten – fifth-graders, to a Fish Camp designed for Story Knife program participants, to weekly School Yard camps, we’ve got something for just about everyone!
Take a look at our list of camp offerings below — and don’t forget to check back regularly with the CITC events calendar for additional opportunities, including our annual Fab Fest, happening this year on June 11.
Indigenous Water Technologies Camp
Part of our Yelchin Lab, an intensive STEM curriculum that offers academic credit, the Indigenous Water Technologies Camp invites high school students to discover the ingenuity of Indigenous knowledge and technology through Native people’s connection to water. Participants must be Alaska Native/American Indian high school students.

Story Knife Camps
(If you haven’t check out our recent story about the Story Knife Program, don’t miss it!) Combining traditional storytelling, modern technology, and cultural activities, Story Knife camps are open to Alaska Native/American Indian high school students.
Students who enroll in the Story Knife Water Camp will experience kayaking, swimming, Native crafting, and more — plus they will make their own survival boat.
Meanwhile, Story Knife Fish Camp features fishing, fish skin projects, a hatchery tour, and a hands-on lesson in smoking fish.

Schoolyard Summer Camp
Gardening, kayaking, crafting, adventuring — Schoolyard Camps have it all! All School Yard camps feature time making ideas come to life in the Fab Lab, in addition to outdoor and other activities. These camps are open to Alaska Native/American Indian students ages 12 – 18 who are enrolled with the Anchorage School District.

Passages Fab Lab Camp
These camps offer Fab Lab experience to elementary and middle school Alaska Native/American Indian students.
Passages Camps are currently closed to registration.

Middle School Bike Camp: July 5 – 8
Elementary Animal Camp (grades 1 – 3): July 11 – 15
Elementary Indigenous Food Science Camp (grades 4 – 6): August 1 – 5
Cultural Connections Summer Camps
While these camps are closed to additional students, this program offers a specific group of students Yup’ik language learning. Students who participate in Cultural Connections get involved in kindergarten, through in-school CITC programming. CITC staff follow students through the fifth grade, providing language building activities and education. During camp, students enjoy field trips and are provided breakfast and lunch (thanks to the Children’s Lunchbox), plus an afternoon snack (provided by the JOM program).
Fab Fest
Finally, don’t forget Fab Fest, right around the corner on June 11. It’s our annual celebration of culture and STEM, offering activities on-site, lunch, STEM projects, school supplies, take-home activities, and more!
