Preparing Your Child for Kindergarten Success

Kindergarten marks an exciting milestone in your child’s life! At Clare Swan Early Learning Center, we’re committed to helping every child start school with confidence and joy. Children must be 5 years old on or before September 1 to enroll in kindergarten.

What Does “Kindergarten Ready” Mean?

In Alaska, kindergarten readiness is measured across five important areas of development:

  1. Physical Well-Being, Health, and Motor Development
  2. Social and Emotional Development
  3. Approaches to Learning
  4. Cognition and General Knowledge
  5. Communication, Language, and Literacy

When your child enters kindergarten, teachers will observe their skills using the Alaska Developmental Profile (ADP) – a tool that helps identify strengths and areas for growth.

About the Alaska Developmental Profile (ADP)

The ADP provides a snapshot of your child’s development as they begin kindergarten. This state-required assessment helps:

  • Teachers understand your child’s unique needs
  • Schools develop appropriate learning experiences
  • Families identify ways to support learning at home
